What is tooth extraction (Wisdom extraction, Simple tooth extraction)?

Prior to surgery, the dentist will evaluate your medical history to get a general understating of your mouth. The dentist will then plan for a precise and effective treatment by taking an x-ray of the problem area.

The extraction process is carried out with local anaesthesia to numb the teeth and the surrounding tissues. Normally, the dentist is very careful not to damage the bone. The dentist shakes the teeth with an elevator (a specialized tool) until the periodontal ligaments break. He then uses a pair of forceps to extract the tooth. The process is performed with an injection to numb the area around the tooth. Simple tooth extractions are preferred whenever feasible because they have fewer adverse effects. This procedure is carried out if the tooth is damaged, broken, or decayed.

Wisdom teeth extraction

This is a complex procedure commonly done by oral surgeons. Normally, the doctor makes a small incision into the gum to gain access to the tooth. In some cases, the tooth is fragmented into small pieces. The level of discomfort will depend on how difficult it was to extract the tooth.

The procedure is usually performed when the tooth is severely damaged or in cases where there is not enough space for the tooth. If your dentist suggests you go through the procedure, postponing the extraction could cause infection, pain, or misalignment of teeth.

Wisdom Teeth Removal Complications

The recovery can take up to 4 weeks and/or sometimes longer depending on how invasive the surgical approach is
Chances of temporary damage to the nerves in the surrounding teeth or skin tissue area
Short episodes of bleeding from socket (where the tooth was extracted) post-operation

Preparation For Wisdom Teeth Surgery

It is important to understand our dentist will have looked at the x-rays of your jaw and teeth to have determined the right course of action. It is up to the patient if they would prefer local anesthesia or sedation, but will be recommended by the dentist more often times than not which should be administered for the patient’s case.

Prior to the surgery, you will be informed of any prescription medication you may need to take, as well as how to eat and drink liquids to avoid pain or causing damage to the incisions. Procedure Expectations

There are three types of anesthetic your dentist may recommend best for you based on the complexity of the operation and your tolerance:

Local Anesthetic: Using one or more injections, your dentist will administer an anesthetic fluid through local areas of your mouth. Although you will be awake during the surgery, you won’t feel any pain in most cases, but some pressure.
Mild/ Moderate Sedation: unlike general anaesthesia, it can be done orally with medication or inhalation laughing gas. The dentist will also apply a local anesthetic to your gums as well (at the location of the incision)
Deep sedation: Using a mask, you will inhale the medication or by using an IV-line through your arm. You will lose consciousness and have no memory of the procedure. Keep in mind that your heart rate, breathing and heart rhythm will be monitored by the dentistry team working on you. This technique is mostly done by a specialist or well-trained dentists. it is still different from the medical level general anaesthesia.

Post-Surgery

After the procedure, our dentist will touch upon some key factors in order to have a successful healing process, such as medication, eating and drinking, activity, and brushing. It is always recommended the first day after your surgery you rest so the anesthetic can wear off.
