Wisdom extraction, Simple tooth extraction
What is tooth extraction (Wisdom extraction, Simple tooth extraction)?
It’s the removal of a tooth from its socket in the bone. The extraction process will depend on the location of the tooth. For example, a front tooth is easier to extract than a molar with multiple roots.
The wisdom tooth extraction/surgery is a dental procedure that involves the removal of your wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, develop during adult years in the back corners of your upper and lower row of teeth. It is very difficult to keep them clean let alone floss the area.
Extraction of the wisdom tooth is necessary if there is not enough space for the wisdom tooth to grow and/or causes discomfort, or causes dental complications to the other teeth. Oral surgeons and dentists specialize in wisdom tooth extractions, and may even suggest for you to extract your wisdom teeth prior to any potential complications. Keeping them may put the adjacent teeth at risk of cavity and bone loss as it is quite difficult to floss that area.
There is nothing to fear if the procedure is carried out by an experienced hand.

The team is committed to working with you to give a rewarding dental experience. It’s worth mentioning that the clinic uses state-of-the-art technology to ensure quality services.
Once you visit the clinic, the caring team will take you to the tooth extraction procedure. Unlike the competition, SunLake involves the patient in every decision process. The idea is to paint a clear picture that focuses on meeting your expectations.
Prior to surgery, the dentist will evaluate your medical history to get a general understating of your mouth. The dentist will then plan for a precise and effective treatment by taking an x-ray of the problem area.
The extraction process is carried out with local anaesthesia to numb the teeth and the surrounding tissues. Normally, the dentist is very careful not to damage the bone. Once the process is over, the socket is covered with sterile gauze to control the bleeding. It’s normal if you feel some discomfort.
Lastly, the dentist will prescribe some pain medication/antibiotics to ensure infection-free healing. And depending on your surgery, he may recommend a restricted diet for 7-10 days. Everything is simplified, so your life will be back to normal in a few days.
When The Wisdom Teeth Removal Is Recommended?
Between the ages of 16 to 25, your last permanent teeth erupt in the mouth also known as your wisdom teeth, or third molars. While some people may never develop them, those who do sometimes run into complications if they keep them. As mentioned earlier, a common issue is the limited space the molar has in order to grow properly.
Often you will hear your dentist will use the term “impacted” If your wisdom tooth is trapped in your jaw or beneath your gums. If it grows in an angled position it may damage and cause cavity or bone loss to the next tooth and put the next tooth at risk of loss.
In the worst cases, the wisdom tooth will grow impacted into the jawbone and puts the area at risk of infection or immense pain.
Types of tooth extractions
There are two main types of tooth extraction:
- Simple extraction
- Wisdom teeth extraction
Simple extraction
It’s performed on the tooth that can be seen on the mouth – the tooth that has already erupted from the gum line. The dentist shakes the teeth with an elevator (a specialized tool) until the periodontal ligaments break. He then uses a pair of forceps to extract the tooth. The process is performed with an injection to numb the area around the tooth. Simple tooth extractions are preferred whenever feasible because they have fewer adverse effects. This procedure is carried out if the tooth is damaged, broken, or decayed.
Wisdom teeth extraction
This is a complex procedure commonly done by oral surgeons. Normally, the doctor makes a small incision into the gum to gain access to the tooth. In some cases, the tooth is fragmented into small pieces. The level of discomfort will depend on how difficult it was to extract the tooth.
The procedure is usually performed when the tooth is severely damaged or in cases where there is not enough space for the tooth. If your dentist suggests you go through the procedure, postponing the extraction could cause infection, pain, or misalignment of teeth.
Signs That Indicate You Are A Candidate For Wisdom Teeth Extraction
If you have any of these following symptoms or issues pertaining to your health, you may be eligible for the extraction of wisdom teeth:
- Pressure and pain
- Extra food stuck behind or beneath the wisdom tooth
- The wisdom tooth is impacted and affects other teeth
- Growth of cyst or infections around the tooth-penetrated area
- Headaches and/or pressure in the jaw region
Wisdom Teeth Removal Complications
The majority of wisdom tooth extractions are completed without severe or permanent damage. While the chances are low for the surgical outcomes to result negatively, there are some things you need to be aware of as a patient:
- The recovery can take up to 4 weeks and/or sometimes longer depending on how invasive the surgical approach is
- Chances of temporary damage to the nerves in the surrounding teeth or skin tissue area
- Short episodes of bleeding from socket (where the tooth was extracted) post-operation
Preparation For Wisdom Teeth Surgery
Preparing for a wisdom tooth extraction surgery. These options include asking us questions such as “What type of anaesthesia/sedation method do you use?’’ and “What is the recovery time for the surgery?”.
It is important to understand our dentist will have looked at the x-rays of your jaw and teeth to have determined the right course of action. It is up to the patient if they would prefer local anesthesia or sedation, but will be recommended by the dentist more often times than not which should be administered for the patient’s case.
Prior to the surgery, you will be informed of any prescription medication you may need to take, as well as how to eat and drink liquids to avoid pain or causing damage to the incisions. You may need to think about driving situations as well – it is highly recommended you do not drive yourself home from the dental office post-operation if sedation has not worn off yet.
Procedure Expectations
There are three types of anesthetic your dentist may recommend best for you based on the complexity of the operation and your tolerance:
- Local Anesthetic: Using one or more injections, your dentist will administer an anesthetic fluid through local areas of your mouth. Although you will be awake during the surgery, you won’t feel any pain in most cases, but some pressure.
- Mild/ Moderate Sedation: unlike general anaesthesia, it can be done orally with medication or inhalation laughing gas. The dentist will also apply a local anesthetic to your gums as well (at the location of the incision)
- Deep sedation: Using a mask, you will inhale the medication or by using an IV-line through your arm. You will lose consciousness and have no memory of the procedure. Keep in mind that your heart rate, breathing and heart rhythm will be monitored by the dentistry team working on you. This technique is mostly done by a specialist or well-trained dentists. it is still different from the medical level general anaesthesia.
Post-Surgery
After the procedure, our dentist will touch upon some key factors in order to have a successful healing process, such as medication, eating and drinking, activity, and brushing. It is always recommended the first day after your surgery you rest so the anesthetic can wear off.
If you experience difficulty breathing, swallowing, persistent numbness, or blood and pus in nasal discharge, contact us immediately to avoid damage done to the surrounding tissue and nerves.
