Sedation Dentistry Solutions

What’s Sedation (Laughing Gas)?

This is a sedative agent that is inhaled through the nose. Laughing gas is used during dental procedures to ease fear and anxiety which most patients usually suffer from. Its name is derived from the fact that it produces a feeling of giddiness and comfort. Its sedation effect also helps to reduce painful sensations and discomforts.

Note that this type of sedation will only make you feel relaxed and won’t knock you out completely. sedation laughing gas newmarket sunlake

How Is It Administered?

The active ingredient that is found in this sedative is nitrous oxide. The odourless and colourless gas is available in a wide range of scents which include fruit and vanilla. Laughing gas contains 70 per cent nitrous oxide and 30 per cent oxygen but dentists can mix them in varying amounts depending on the desired effect i.e. minimal sedation, moderate sedation, and deep sedation.

The dentist usually fits a rubber mask over the patient’s nose where the patient will comfortably inhale the gas. Note that this sedative agent works very quickly.

Additionally, its effects also wear out a few seconds after you stop inhaling it. Note that most patients usually feel its effects in less than 30 seconds and they end up becoming relaxed and comfortable in less than three minutes. Unlike other forms of sedation, laughing gas does result in drowsiness or a feeling of “hangover”. It’s a user-friendly type of sedation that is highly effective.

Who Requires Sedation Dentistry?

There are many reasons why some patients may consider the use of laughing gas. Some of the common reasons why this sedative is normally administered to patients include:

  • Phobia in relation to dental procedures
  • Oral nerves that are very sensitive
  • A small mouth which easily becomes very sore
  • Anxiety disorder
  • Fear of needles
  • A bad dental experience in the past

Conditions Under Which Laughing Gas Shouldn’t Be Used

This sedative is considered generally safe for most patients. However, it isn’t the correct choice for everyone. Laughing gas can’t be administered to the following groups of people:

  • Those who suffer from chronic diseases like obstructive pulmonary
  • Pregnant women in the 1st trimester
  • Those who have a deficiency in cobalamin
  • Patients using bleomycin sulfate drugs
  • Patients with emotional issues or with a drug addiction history

Is Laughing Gas Safe for Children

Yes. As a matter of fact, laughing gas is the most recommended type of sedative for children with small mouths or those who suffer from anxiety. However, parents should first discuss with the dentist in case their children suffer from nausea.
