What Should You Know About Dental Implants?

What are dental implants?

Dental implants simply refer to replacement tooth roots. Typically, a dentist surgically positions metal posts into the jawbone below your gums. This allows dentists to mount replacement teeth onto the abutment which is placed on top of the implant.

Once dental implants (artificial tooth roots) are fused in your jawbone, they become sturdy enough to support artificial teeth. Studies show that millions of Canadians suffer tooth loss primarily due to injury, tooth decay, or periodontal disease. For so long, dentists used to prefer dentures and bridges as a form of treatment for people with missing teeth. dental implant service

That was before dental implants were developed. The problem with dentures is that they made it difficult for people to chew many types of food.

This, of course, has changed after the introduction of dental implants. Today, implants are by far the closest people with missing teeth can get to having natural, healthy teeth. You can therefore eat, smile, talk and laugh without worrying about your teeth.

In cases where one or more of your teeth are missing, dental implants is one of several solutions. Dental implants replace your missing tooth roots with an artificial root made of titanium metal, thus creating a natural and comfortable look.

Dental implants can be used in various cases such as a single tooth replacement, bridgework on multiple implants, or implant-supported dentures.

The way dental implants are placed relies heavily upon the state of your jawbone in terms of the quality of the bone and the dimensions of the missing area. The significant advantage of dental implants is the durability it provides to replace the missing tooth.

How the dental implant procedure is performed?

Dental inserts are precisely positioned in your jawbone using a surgical approach, where they replace missing teeth’ position and function. Since the titanium integrates with the jawbone, the inserts are designed to stay stable over time and cause no damage to the supporting tissue. In cases where there is not enough bone to hold the implant in place, a bone graft can be done in order to build up new bone to the site.

Overall, dental implants might be ideal for you in the event that you:

  • Lack teeth in one or more areas of your mouth
  • Have sufficient tissue that allows for the implants to be placed
  • Have healthy gum tissue
  • You do not want to wear prosthetic removable dentures
  • Do not smoke

The Potential Health Risks of Dental Implants

Like any dental procedure, dental implants can come with risks. Complications can/may include:

  • Contamination at the embed site
  • Injury or harm to nerves pertaining to surrounding teeth, jaw, and lips
  • Sinus issues where dental inserts placed in the upper jaw distend into one of your sinus holes

Dental Implant Procedure

The process for dental implants may include an assortment of trained professionals, including specialists who have experience in states of the mouth, jaw, and face (oral and maxillofacial specialist), a dental specialist having some expertise in treating structures that help the teeth, for example, gums and bones (periodontist), a dental specialist who plans and fits artificial teeth (prosthodontist).

Since dental inserts require at least a single surgery, you should have an extensive assessment to get ready for the cycle, including:

  • Extensive dental test. You may have dental X-rays and CT scans taken, and have silicon models made of your teeth and jaw to model the positioning of the dental implant.
  • Audit of your clinical history. Inform our dentist of any concerns regarding ailments and any medications you take, including over-the-counter medications and enhancements (drugs) or supplements. In case you have certain heart conditions or surgical prosthetic replacements, our dentist may recommend antibiotics before the dental procedure to help avoid postoperative complications.
  • Surgical Plan. Customized to your circumstance, this arrangement considers factors, for example, the number of teeth you may need to replace and the state of your jawbone and remaining teeth.

Placing The Dental Implant

During the procedure, the implant surgeon makes an incision in your gum to uncover the bone. Soft tissue flaps extend to the bone where the dental embed metal post will be drilled in. Since the post will represent the tooth root, it needs to be deep in the bone according to the measurements. At this point of the procedure, you will have an implant post in the bone completing the surgical phase.

Adding The Prosthetic Crown

Once the gums have healed, further appointments will be arranged with the dentist to take impressions. These impressions are used to make the crown; a tooth-shaped permanent cap. The crown will not be placed until the bone has completely healed and is healthy enough to support the load of the new crown.

Our Sunlake Dental Care Dentist can select artificial teeth that are removable, fixed or a mixture of both. Removable teeth contain artificial teeth surrounded by natural-looking plastic acrylic gum. A fixed tooth is an artificial tooth screwed into or cemented upon an implant abutment. This seals and secures the implant and meets the final stage of treatment.

What types of dental implants are?

There are two main types of dental implants which include the following:

Endosteal implants> Subperiosteal implants

Endosteal implants

Endosteal implants are a type of material that is surgically infused into the jawbone. After the gum tissue surrounding the implant has healed, a second surgery will be performed to connect a post to the initial implant. Afterward, an artificial tooth or teeth will be placed onto the post.

Subperiosteal implants

Subperiosteal implants refer to dental implants that are made of metal frameworks. The metal framework is normally fixed into the jawbone. The dentist will then attach posts to the metal framework before placing artificial teeth onto the posts.

Our dentist will help determine which type of dental implants best suits you. At Sun Lake Dental Care in Newmarket, we use the latest technology to offer high-quality implants to patients in Ontario and beyond.

After Dental Implant Surgery

Dental implants require surgery which demands a series of post-op treatment or follow-ups. While the medication prescribed is meant to work quickly, some discomforts may still persist such as:

  • Inflammation of gums and cheeks
  • Minimal to severe bruising of the surrounding area
  • Pressure or pain at the site of the implant
  • Minimal bleeding

During the dental surgery, our Sunlake Dental Care dentist will tell you if the stitches you received are dissolvable or not. If they are dissolvable, you will not need a revision appointment to have them removed.
