Dental veneers are often made from resin composite materials or porcelain, which are placed superficially to the outer layer of the tooth to improve the overall appearance. It is bonded to the enamel of the tooth for durability and strengthened by preparing the natural tooth prior to applying the veneer shell.

There are a number of different cosmetic uses for dental veneers, such as shaping the form of an original tooth for a certain desired appearance. Deformities to the natural tooth include chipped or cracked enamel to a severely discoloured smile. Depending on the severity of the procedure, some may prefer up to six teeth are done, while others would settle for the fix of a singular tooth.

  1. Dental Veneers Procedure

In advance to receiving veneers, some appointments are required before-hand to discuss plans, cost, and maintenance. In certain cases where the teeth are unaligned, the dentist may recommend a time period in which braces or a retainer needs to be worn in order to properly position the teeth for the procedure.

During the appointments, x-rays will be taken of multiple angles of the mouth, including cleanings. These are important for identifying underlining health issues of the teeth such as cavities, decay, and gum disease. Any indications of poor oral hygiene prohibit the patient from being able to receive the proceeds of the veneer application.

If the patient’s overall oral hygiene is good, the dentist will typically shave off an approximate 0.5 mm of each tooth in order to place the veneer shell. It ensures the veneer will strengthen on a broad section of the tooth to become resistant enough to endure everyday tasks requiring the usage of teeth, such as eating and brushing teeth. The final result of dental veneers will be based on a dental impression taken of the mouth prior to shaving the teeth down.

  1. The Difference Between Porcelain and Composite Dental Veneers

The few alterations between porcelain and composite veneers can create a world of difference for an individual. Porcelain dental veneers are shells of porcelain bonded to the outer surface of the tooth, while composite veneers are resin applied to the outer surface of teeth which are then cured by light to harden.

Essentially both types of veneers provide the same result of improving the cosmetic appearance of the tooth.

Composite veneers are merely applied to the tooth to improve the appearance while being colour-matched to the surrounding teeth to create a seamless look. This procedure can be created within a singular visit. Porcelain veneers on the other hand require at least three visits; the preparation of the tooth, delivery or cementation, and the application.

The type of material and precision needed to apply to the porcelain teeth is also the cause of long-lasting durability of approximately thirteen to fifteen years. Once the tooth is shaved down to prepare for the cementation or placement of porcelain, it allows for proper bondage. Composite dental veneers are superficial, thus having an approximate durability span of two to five years with a much higher risk of staining and chipping.

  1. Are Dental Veneers Permanent?

Porcelain veneers are permanent but will require maintenance over an individual’s life span. With the estimated durability limit of thirteen to fifteen years, the dental veneers may need to be replaced due to the changes of the mouth and jaw such as gum recession and bone. Composite veneers are much more prone to chipping and will to require maintenance such as avoiding hard foods to bite into (apples, hard cookies, etc.).

  1. Dental Veneers vs Dental Implants

Dental Veneers are used for cosmetic purposes in which the tooth is not esthetically pleasing, but healthy nonetheless. Implants on the other hand are required in cases when the tooth cannot be salvaged or causes too much pain or complication. Moreover, if there is not enough bone, synthetic or animal-reprocessed biocompatible bone materials are used to graft and reconstruct the bone prior to the implant surgery.

While porcelain veneers require a procedure to shave the tooth down and only place a shell superficially, tooth implants require the complete extraction of the tooth. A dental implant is replaced in its original position, commonly made out of special biosynthetic titanium and prosthetic crown. The procedure for implants is much more extensive than porcelain or composite veneer application. In most cases, the patient will be under anesthesia and will require multiple follow-up appointments to ensure the healthy healing of the surrounding tissue of the implant.

  1. Dental Veneer Pros and Cons

Before settling on receiving dental veneers, it is important to understand the risks and benefits you will be obtaining both long and short term. Whenever done appropriately, dental veneers can be very uniform and normal looking in comparison to the rest of the surrounding teeth. The veneers can rapidly mend worn/aged, broken, turned, stained or cracked teeth.

Numerous components become an integral factor when deciding whether veneers are the most suitable option. A significant principle to recall is the strength of original teeth dictates the wellbeing of cosmetically altered teeth. If the original teeth were soft and prone to breaking or chipping, chances are the veneers wouldn’t make it the full span of what they were meant. This is a discussion to have with the dentist, who will advise you on the best course.

It is also important to remember porcelain veneer teeth are irreversible, and once the procedure is completed, minimal changes can be done to alter what has been done. This is tied with side effects; although there have been a few numbers of cases where patients have complained of pain after receiving porcelain veneers, it is necessary to understand and consider the possibilities. Patients who cannot tolerate pain very well should discuss possible side effects prior to advancing with the procedure.
